How to Choose Microfiber Towels for Car Detailing

The right microfiber towel depends on the job. Drying a wet hood requires a different setup from removing polish residue or finishing a small trim panel. Start with how you plan to use the towel, then compare its size, construction and care requirements.

Choose a drying towel for water removal

For the drying step after a wash, look for a towel intended to absorb water over larger panels. The Finisher is a 20 x 32-inch, 1100 GSM microfiber drying towel with an 80/20 blend and hidden-edge construction. Work on clean, rinsed paint and use gentle passes. Avoid pushing hard or dragging visible debris across the finish.

Use smaller towels for buffing and finishing

A 16 x 16-inch towel is manageable for folding into clean sections. The Gray Beast uses 350 GSM microfiber, a 70/30 blend and ultrasonic-cut edges. The Yellow Rag is another 350 GSM, edgeless option for wax removal, polish buffing and final wipe-downs. Its yellow color can help distinguish finishing towels in your storage bins.

Understand GSM without chasing one number

GSM means grams per square meter: a measure of fabric weight relative to area. It does not, on its own, establish how well a towel will perform at every detailing task. Consider the intended use, size and construction alongside GSM. The heavier drying towel and smaller finishing towels in our range serve different purposes.

Buy enough to rotate clean surfaces

Keep spare towels within reach so you can switch when one becomes dirty or saturated. Separate paint towels from wheel and engine-bay towels. No towel can guarantee a scratch-free result if it contains grit or is used on a dirty surface.

Start with a practical kit

The 16-towel Starter Kit combines 10 Gray Beast towels, 5 Yellow Rags and 1 Finisher. Choose it as a ready-made mix, or shop the towel collection to build your own setup. Keep them performing with our microfiber washing guide.
